Biophilia for Healthcare Environments
Timeline: March 2022 - May 2022
Site: Weill Cornell Medicine New York City, NY
Course: DEA 2203 Studio Shift
Team: Group
Role: Researcher
Programs: InDesign
Objective: To create a design guideline packet about biophilic elements that future architects and designers can implement for Weill Cornell Medicine.
Our class was tasked with researching the principles of biophilic design in relation to healthcare and to come up with a set of guidelines that could be implemented in future environmental design projects. My role was to create feature “#7 Connection with Natural Systems”
Introduction:
Biophilia is the idea that humans have an inherent connection to nature and a natural inclination to seek out environments that include natural elements. In healthcare, biophilia can be used to help improve patient outcomes and promote healing. There is evidence that exposure to nature can have a positive impact on mental and physical health. For example, being in natural environments or viewing scenes of nature can reduce stress and anxiety, lower blood pressure, and improve overall well-being. In healthcare settings, incorporating elements of nature into the design of hospitals and other facilities, such as gardens, green walls, and natural light, can create a more calming and healing environment for patients.
